270 & 299 Procedure

The CST 270s (A, B, and C) are a series of graded independent study courses that result in an annotated bibliography and an essay that synthesizes what you have read. The CST 270 series must be taken with Cultural Studies faculty. Graduate students must identify their Major Professor at the start of the 270 process. The Major Professor will oversee your research and be your main support as you become ABD and write your dissertation. The Major Professor must be one of the 270 instructors. All three 270 faculty must sit on the qualifying exam committee and will be responsible for writing the questions for the written portion of the qualifying exam. In consultation with their Graduate Advisor, graduate students must fill out the CST 270 Series and Major Professor Form to report who the Major Professor will be and name all other 270 faculty. Important: This form must be completed by the end of the quarter before the CST 270 sequence begins. Only after your CST 270 faculty, your Graduate Advisor, AND Major Professor sign this form will the Graduate Group Coordinator issue any CRNs for the 270 sequence.

Before beginning 270 work each quarter, both instructor and student must sign a CST 270 Learning Contract specifying the reading list, the scope of work, and the kind of written work to be produced by the end of the quarter. The learning contract must be approved by the graduate adviser and submitted on this page by the beginning of the quarter.  Additionally, you must ask the program coordinator to provide an individual course number (CRN) for each 270 tutorial.

As with the 270 series, you must work with the program coordinator to create an individual course number (CRN) for each 299 or 299D.  Make sure that the program coordinator has the name of the major professor who is supervising you. Reading lists should be submitted on, or attached to, this page.
